As Director of the Midwest Office of MacRostie Historic Advisors, Allen Johnson provides strategic consulting and planning services to a diverse mix of public and private sector clients. He has over 20 years of professional experience in historic preservation planning and consulting, with special expertise in state and federal historic tax credit certification for large commercial projects. Previously, as Director of Architectural Review for the Massachusetts State Historic Preservation Office, Allen administered the U.S. Department of the Interior program for the tax-advantaged rehabilitation of historic residential, commercial, and industrial properties.
In private practice since 1989, Allen has assisted numerous clients and their design teams to meet the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation and to obtain certification for state and federal rehabilitation tax credits. He has prepared successful tax credit applications for a wide range of historic rehabilitation projects, including railroad stations, mill buildings, former military complexes, institutional campuses, schools, commercial blocks, and hotels. His work on the 2003 rehabilitation of Boston’s Ritz-Carlton Hotel was recognized with awards from the Boston Preservation Alliance and the Massachusetts Historical Commission.
In the Midwest, Allen provides consulting services for federal and state historic tax credit certification, listing in the National Register of Historic Places, Illinois Property Tax Assessment Freeze, Cook County “Class L” Property Tax Incentive, Section 106 and Section 707 compliance, and architectural design review and technical assistance.
Allen is well-known for working collaboratively with clients to identify creative solutions that balance client and project objectives with historic preservation principles and regulatory requirements. He maintains excellent working relationships with review staffs at the National Park Service, State Historic Preservation Offices, and the City of Chicago Landmarks Division.
Allen is a member of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Landmarks Illinois, the Wisconsin Historical Society, the Chicago Architectural Foundation, and the American Institute of Architects Chicago. He is also a past member of the executive committee of the board of directors of Preservation Massachusetts.
Mr. Johnson holds a B.A. degree in History, with Honors, from Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota and undertook Master’s Studies in Historic Preservation Planning at Cornell University. |
