Amendment and Expansion of the district listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2008
PROJECT OVERVIEW
MacRostie Historic Advisors LLC prepared an amendment and expansion nomination for an existing National Register Historic District in 2008. The Upper Central Business in New Orleans was originally listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1990; the existing nomination used the 50-year cut-off for historic significance, which excluded buildings constructed between 1940 and 1958 from being considered contributing elements to the district. The existing historic district was deemed significant for both its architecture and its role in the commercial and industrial sectors of the Louisiana economy. MacRostie staff undertook focused architectural and historical research to document the district's continued significance through the 1950s.
MacRostie staff then conducted an extensive on-site survey of the district, focusing on the existing boundaries, buildings included within the existing period of significance, and buildings constructed between 1940 and 1958. Staff concluded the boundaries needed to be expanded to include buildings that contributed to the commercial and industrial past of the district. Staff also concluded that several buildings constructed between 1940 and 1958 were architecturally significant and contributed to the commercial and industrial significance of the area, necessitating an amendment to the period of significance.
After the on-site survey, staff prepared a written nomination and supporting documentation to amend and expand the existing district and then presented the nomination to the Louisiana State Review Board. The Upper Central Business District (Amendment and Expansion) was formally listed in the National Register in August of 2008.
