As Director of the Midwest Office of MacRostie Historic Advisors, Allen Johnson provides historic preservation services to a diverse mix of public and private sector clients. He has over twenty years of professional experience in historic preservation planning and consulting, with special expertise in state and federal historic tax credit certification for large commercial projects. Previously, Allen served as Director of Architectural Review for the Massachusetts State Historic Preservation Office.
In private practice since 1989, Allen has prepared successful tax credit applications for a wide range of historic rehabilitation projects, including railroad stations, mill buildings, former military complexes, institutional campuses, schools, commercial blocks, and hotels.
Allen has served as guest lecturer on the subject of historic building development at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design, Boston University’s American Studies Department, John Marshall Law School in Chicago, the College of Architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology, and the Northwestern University Kellogg Graduate School of Management. He has also been a featured speaker at regional and national tax credit workshops and statewide preservation conferences.
Allen is a member of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Landmarks Illinois, the Wisconsin Historical Society, the Chicago Architectural Foundation, and the American Institute of Architects Chicago.
Allen holds a B.A. degree in History, with Honors, from Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota and undertook Master’s Studies in Historic Preservation Planning at Cornell University.
